Jharkhand assembly stalled over demand for CBI probe

Proceedings in the Jharkhand assembly were disrupted Wednesday after the government did not accede to the demand by opposition parties for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into scams that have taken place in the state in the last few years.

When the assembly met at 11 a.m., opposition members moved a stop work motion which was rejected by Speaker C.P. Singh. But opposition members came to the well of the house, pressing their demand.

Jharkhand capable of handling Maoist menace: Soren

Ranchi/Jamshedpur, Mar 8 (PTI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren today said the state is capable of handling Maoist menace, a statement which was criticised by the Naxals.

"The state is capable of effectively containing extremist violence. Anti-Naxal operations are on," Soren told the state assembly in reply to a query by Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) MLA Pradip Yadav on whether the state has taken any decision to launch 'Operation Green Hunt' against Maoists.

SC warns Raj Thackeray, says stop hate speeches

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday warned Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray against making hate speeches against other communities. The court told Raj that unless he stopped making such speeches, case would be filed against him.

Raj had approached the Supreme Court to transfer the cases registered against him from Patna, Jamshedpur and Madhya Pradesh to Delhi for allegedly making hate speeches against North Indians.

NEW DELHI: A Mumbai businessman, considered to be a close aide of former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, was duped by a man who promised to make him a Rajya Sabha MP. The businessman paid Rs 3.5 crore for the promised favour.

Jharkhand to work with Centre to tackle Maoists: Soren to PC

New Delhi : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren called on Home Minister P Chidambaram here on Wednesday and briefed him on the various measures taken by his government to tackle Naxals.

Neyaz Ahmed, Director General of Police, Jharkhand, also accompanied the Chief Minister and took part in the discussions.

"We are trying to control the Maoist activities in our state. We appreciate the measures taken by the central government, we will work together to tackle the Maoist menace," Soren told reporters after the meeting.

Soren Govt a friend of Maoists: Opposition

Ranchi, Feb 21 (PTI) The opposition today charged the Jharkhand Government with having friendly relations with the Maoists and said the recent abduction and release of the BDO was a pointer to the nexus between them.

"The Maoists have been running a parallel government in Jharkhand. The morale of the extremists has got a boost because of the government's friendly relations with them," Congress and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantric) said in a memorandum to the Governor, M O H Farooq.

Mamata Banerjee not soft on Maoists: Chidambaram

NEW DELHI: Union home minister P Chidambaram on Friday insisted that his Cabinet colleague Mamata Banerjee was not soft on Maoists, as is being
alleged in the wake of her reported move to have a reference to the Midnapore attack dropped from the upcoming President’s address to Parliament.

“Mamata Banerjee has not been soft on Maoists. She condemns their violence and attacks on railway properties,” he clarified at a media interaction organised by the Indian Women Press Corps here.

BJP wants Soren to deal firmly with naxalites

INDORE: After endorsing a “bullet for bullet” policy to deal with naxalites in its discussion on the national security resolution adopted here on Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday said it wanted Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren to implement the “strong action” policy against left-wing extremism.

General secretary Ananth Kumar told journalists on the concluding day of the party’s three-day conclave: “We have conveyed to the Jharkhand Chief Minister we want firm and strong action against naxals.”

Congress and BJP activists clash in Jharkhand

Hazaribagh (Jharkhand), Feb 16 (ANI): Party workers of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed during a BJP organised demonstration against price rise here on Monday.

The Congress workers chased the opposition party activists with canes as they were shouting anti-government slogans and were carrying effigies of Congress leaders including that of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Party President Sonia Gandhi.

The BJP workers accused the administration of conniving with the Congress workers, as they did not prevent the incident despite prior intimation about it.

Soren urges Maoists to release abducted Jharkhand BDO

Ranchi, Feb 15 (ANI): Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Monday urged the Maoists for safe release of abducted Block Development Officer (BDO) Prashant Kumar Leyak.

In a signed statement, Soren also offered to initiate a dialogue with banned Maoist groups.

"I appeal to the naxalites to free the official so that the officials can work for the state's development in a fear-free environment. Abduction of an innocent officer is not a solution to any problem," Soren said.
