State to okay CBI probe into funds row

Ranchi, Sept. 2: The state administration will recommend a CBI probe into alleged misappropriation of a police secret service fund in tune with a high court observation that asked it to act according to the Constitution.

Governor’s adviser V.S. Dubey said the state would recommend the CBI probe in a day or two. “The draft letter was ready. It was delayed as the chief secretary was in Delhi to attend an official meeting. It will be sent to the premier agency, possibly tomorrow,” he told The Telegraph.

Unified command to hold meet on Sept 9

RANCHI: The unified command will hold its first meeting on September 9 to discuss strategy for containing extremism in the state. The Union home ministry had given a proposal to this effect.

The Jharkhand command being headed by chief secretary A K Singh comprises senior bureaucrats, state police officials and representatives of central paramilitary forces besides one retired major-general rank official of the Indian Army.

No age limit for power board chief's post: SC

The Supreme Court on August 30 ruled that there was no age limit for the chairman’s post under the Electricity Act.

Quoting the Electricity Act, the apex court reinstated H B Lal as chairman of Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) and quashed Jharkhand High Court’s order.

On April 27, 2009, the high court had quashed the September 27, 2008, appointment of Lal as JSEB chairman, questioning the state government’s role in selecting a “90-year-old” for a second term.

PM expected to visit Jharkhand in third week of September

Ranchi, Sep 1 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may visit Jharkhand this month to participate in a tribal conference.
Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader Ramdayal Munda yesterday met the Prime Minister in Delhi and extended the invitation, requesting him to attend a ''Conference of Gram Pradhans'' to be held here in the third week of September.
"The conference will be organised by the Tribal Advisory Council and the Prime Minister has accepted the invitation to attend," Munda said in a press release here today.

Fair price shop dealer lynched in Jharkhand

Suspected Maoists beat a fair price shop dealer to death in Jharkhand's Latehar district Tuesday, police said.

Mukesh Prasad was killed in Turudih village of Latehar, about 140 km from here.

The villagers alleged that he was selling the fair price shop foodgrain in open market and not providing wheat and rice to villagers at government-prescribed low rates, a police officer said.

To gain the sympathy of villagers, suspected Maoists picked up Mukesh from his house and beat him. The villagers also joined them and lynched him, the police officer said.

FIR against Koda in multi-crore electricity scam

An FIR has been filed against former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda and 28 others by the Vigilance Bureau, accusing them of forgery and criminal conspiracy while awarding contracts to a Hyderabad-based company for rural electrification.

The Vigilance Bureau filed the FIR yesterday against Mr. Koda, RJD leaders Girinath Singh and Prakash Ram, three former chairmen of Jharkhand State Electricity Board and others, Inspector General of Police, M. V. Rao, said here today.

The RJD was one of the parties which had supported Koda’s 23-month-old government from outside.

JMM demands waiver of loans and electricity bills of farmers

Jharkhand DGP Meets Dhoni

Jharkhand Police chief Neyaz Ahmed today met Team India captain M S Dhoni at the cricketer's residence.

"Dhoni wanted to meet me. I myself said I would drop in and nothing like that," Ahmed told PTI when asked whether reports of the state police chief seeking Dhoni’s help in a campaign appealing to Maoists to shun violence and join the mainstream were true.

Ahmed went to Dhoni’s new house at Harmu here.

Cops seek Dhoni's help in anti-Maoist campaign

RANCHI: Jharkhand Police have sought help of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a campaign against Maoist rebels.

Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Neyaz Ahmad met Dhoni at his home in Harmu housing colony on Monday. The Jharkhand police chief termed the meeting a courtesy call.

However, according to informed sources, Ahmed sought Dhoni's help in a campaign against Maoist rebels. Police want a video message from Dhoni appealing to the Maoists to shun violence and join the mainstream of society.
