Jamshedpur, Jan. 3: A fresh controversy is brewing at the Jharkhand Olympic Association (JOA) in the run-up to the 34th National Games.
Three Jamshedpur-based sports associations — karate, football and swimming — have joined hands to take on the high-handedness of JOA’s top functionaries for denying affiliation to the respective bodies. This has forced the sports bodies to function without grants from the state government. They are also not able to send their teams to participate in national championships.
The city-based sports functionaries have garnered support from as many as seven sports associations, including volleyball, wrestling, rifle, and women’s hockey from Ranchi, sources claimed. With the East Singhbhum District Olympic Association (ESDOA) also throwing its weight around, things don’t seem all that bright, specially with the Games around the corner.
Sports bodies sent a joint complaint to the Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi and secretary Randhir Singh on Friday highlighting their grievances against the JOA, the state’s apex sports body.
A senior functionary of the ESDOA confirmed the development. “I am leaving for New Delhi to deliver the complaint letter in person to top functionaries of the Indian Olympic Association,” he said, requesting anonymity.
With the JOA wresting the control of the karate, swimming and football bodies, officials are left with little control over their own activities. They have threatened to boycott the Games if the JOA did not call an annual general meeting for granting them affiliation.
The developments in the steel city also had a reflection in Ranchi. Sports minister Bandhu Tirkey had called a meeting to discuss the preparations for the Games but was requested to skip it, a source said.
Syed Matloob Hashmi, general secretary of the JOA, said they were aware about the grievances of the sports bodies.
“Two separate bodies are fighting for the control over karate. Both have gone to court and now the matter is pending. How can we grant them recognition?” he said.
Hashmi said they have decided to allow the Jharkhand Swimming Association to organise the training camp but did not confirm affiliation.
As far as football is concerned, he said, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has granted interim affiliation to the soccer body. Hence, JOA could not grant them an affiliation, he argued.
