Rajendra Vidyalaya, Jamshedpur

Introduction: Rajendra Vidyalaya, Jamshedpur, is an English medium school where co-education facilities exist. The school is affiliated to the I.C.S.E. Council, New Delhi. On completion of 25 years of its existence we have celebrated its Silver Jubilee for which a week long attractive program was drawn. There are thousands of students, out of which about 40% are girl students. With a team of 80 teaching staff and 30 non-teaching staff we are on the way to excel the career of our students .

Background: In the year 1970, the Managing Committee of the Bihar Association, Jamshedpur decided to start a school for the benefit of the citizens in keeping with the objectives of the Bihar Association. After a series of discussions, the school project was put up before the members in the AGM of the Association in 1971 and the same was approved with one voice. It was also felt that the medium of the school should be English, and we should try and get it affiliated to the I.C.S.E. Council, New Delhi. It was further decided that the school should be named after Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the 1st President of India.

Initial Years: The work was started in right earnest and a teacher Ms.Shinghamani by name was appointed. The Association at that time had only a couple of rooms which, with the consent of the members were spared for running the Nursery Class of the school in 1971. We had only 5 students in that year. The initial 3-4 years were spent in meeting the guardians and canvassing, for sending their children to our school. We had to literally bring the school children from different areas by our own vehicles and drop them back to their respective home after the school hour. The localities covered were Telco, Indian Cable Company, Tisco Housing Colonies, Adityapur etc. It was really a tough task convincing people to have confidence in us and send their wards to the new school. Slowly but surely, it gathered momentum; and the number of students increased year after year necessitating construction of a proper school building with administrative block and adequate number of class-rooms, science labs, library etc. By the year 1976 we added up to std.V and the number of students reached an encouraging figure of 350. A new school building was constructed with 6 class rooms and the Association's meeting hall was used for Principal's room and office purposes.

Affiliation to the I.C.S.E. Council: We applied to the I.C.S.E. Council in 1978 for affiliation after obtaining necessary recommendation from the State Govt. The school was inspected by a committee appointed by the Council and necessary affiliation was granted to us on 30th March 1978.

Expansion of the school: The affiliation gave us a lot of inspiration and our efforts for a full-fledged school got a real boost. Parents and guardians got convinced about the progress and future of the school. The pressure for admission in our school increased so much that we kept on adding sections in our Science and Biology laboratories with necessary instruments and proper gas line. The first batch of students appeared for the I.C.S.E.Exam in 1982 with an extremely satisfying result. We added +2 classes enabling the students to appear in the ISC exam in 1984.

Conclusion: The objectives with which the school has been established have been achieved to a very great extent. We feel much satisfied when we think that we are serving over 2000 families of the city at any point of time in giving education to their children of high standard. In the last decade more than 1200 students have passed out from our school and many of them are serving the country as Engineers, Doctors, Administrators. Similarly the Air Conditioned auditorium is meeting Educational, Cultural and Social needs of the citizens.

It will be relevant to mention here that we have provided facilities like elevators, bank counter, library and play ground for our staff and students.
