Kolkata: Tata Steel's plant at Jamshedpur reduced the CO2 emission by 36 per cent in past 12 years, according to company sources. This was possible through adoption of several measures, which included, among others, installation of energy efficient equipment and processes, improving the by-product fuel recovery and usage and waste heat recovery.
"A large number of projects have been identified for reduction of energy consumption at CO2 emission to the reach the target level of emission (1.5 t/tls) by 2012", the sources observe. "These projects are in addition to several small process improvement and energy efficient projects". Tata Steel, as the sources point out, is actively participating in the international climate change initiatives taken by World Steel Association and Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate.
It is currently working on more than 17 Clean Development Projects with Ernst & Young. The combined potential of these projects is a reduction of two million tonnes of CO2 a year. The projects are at various stages of approval at UNFCCC.
