Jamshedpur, May 18: It’s official. Tata Steel will play host to the Central University proposed in Jharkhand. And classes are set to begin in Jamshedpur from July 2009.
Vice-chancellor D.T. Khathing told The Telegraph that he had accepted the offer from Tata Steel to start the university from the city on a temporary basis.
Last month, the steel major had proposed to host the central varsity in the city and had promised the vice- chancellor well-equipped infrastructure.
“I have accepted their offer. This gives us a suitable place to start the university. It will function in Jamshedpur for at least the next five years. By this time, we expect the infrastructure to come up at a permanent site, which will be allotted by the state government,” said Khathing.
The vice-chancellor and Tata Steel officials would soon select a suitable location for the varsity. The office of the university, now situated on Kanke Road in Ranchi, would also be shifted to Jamshedpur.
“We have decided to help start the central university by offering one of the Tata Steel’s existing infrastructure. We have quite a few options available and the vice-chancellor can take a decision. We are optimistic that things will materialise soon,” said Sanjay Choudhry, chief, corporate affairs and communications, Tata Steel.
Courses have been finalised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and are awaiting the Union ministry of human resource development’s approval.
Khathing has been searching for land for the university since March.
Elaborating further, he said, necessary infrastructure required to start the university include large rooms, a counselling centre, common rooms, hostels and a medical unit, which he was sure to get with Tata Steel supporting the initiative.
