Ranchi, May 3: Karnataka or Jharkhand? Thousands of engineering and medical aspirants in the state seem to be asking this question as the joint entrance examinations of the two states have fallen back-to-back with a gap of only a day.
The state joint entrance examination is slated on May 19, a day after Karnataka conducts its tests on May 17. Students, who have registered for both the examinations, say that it would not be possible for them to come back from Karnataka in a day.
In fact, many said they would have to forgo the May 19 test if the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB), the body that conducts the joint entrance examination in engineering, medial, agriculture, forestry, veterinary and dental courses, did not defer the examination.
“I will opt for Karnataka if dates in Jharkhand are not deferred. It will be next to impossible to come back to the state from Karnataka in a day,” said Sumit Kumar, an engineering aspirant from Chaibasa (West Singhbhum), who will leave for Bangalore on May 13.
Sources in JCECEB said that the board was contemplating to either pre-pone or post-pone the exam. “We are contemplating a date change, but no final decision has been taken yet,” said a JCECEB official, requesting anonymity.
However, state technical education director Arun Kumar, who is also an ex-officio office-bearer of JCECEB, told The Telegraph there were thin chances of deferring the dates. “We normally ensure that dates of national-level examinations such as IIT-JEE and AIEEE do not clash with those of state joint entrance examination. But it will not be feasible to defer the dates because it is coinciding with the test of some state board,” Kumar said.
JCECEB sources said around 35,000 students have registered for the tests, about 5,000 more than last year. “But if they do not sit for the exams, state engineering colleges will lose out on brilliant students,” an official said.
