Jamshedpur, June 12 : The students’ union elections of Ranchi University (RU) may be held at the end of this year. The vice-chancellor of Ranchi University, A.A. Khan, hinted as much today.
He was here for the Jamshedpur Women’s College’s academic council meeting.
“We are ready to hold the elections provided students co-operate with us. Every time we decide to hold the elections, students resort to agitation,” said Khan.
The last students’ body election was held in 2007, after a gap of 24 years. Last year, the election dates were postponed thrice due to student agitation for a Kolhan University.
RU had planned to conduct students’ elections earlier this year but the Lok Sabha polls delayed plans. The latter also delayed the beginning of the bachelor of education (BEd) course. Students who are appearing this year for the bachelor and masters degrees would have to wait till next year to opt for a BEd course, as the preparation to declare the merit list is still on in colleges.
“The session is already delayed by two months due to the elections. Once the session is delayed, it takes four years to get it on track. We are trying to organise the elections as soon as the session starts for 2009-10. By then the Kolhan University will hopefully start functioning. The decision for the new varsity has to be taken by the governor,” he said.
He said that things were moving in the right direction and the proposed varsity is expected to function soon. The Nilambar-Pitambar University, which was proposed along with the Kolhan University, has already started functioning in Daltonganj.
Khan also inaugurated the new examination cell at the Jamshedpur Women’s College and presented the statute for autonomous colleges at the academic council meeting.
