NEW DELHI: In a setback to those aspiring to form the government in Jharkhand, the Union Cabinet on Thursday is expected to extend President's rule in the state.
Hectic political activity on government formation in Jharkhand gained momentum with state leaders of the Congress and JMM holding parleys throughout the day to thrash out a formula for forming a UPA government.
AICC in-charge of the state K Keshav Rao met JMM chief Shibu Soren to explore the possibility of a new government in the tribal state. Rao also met Ahmed Patel, political secretary to the Congress president, along with a group of Congress MLAs who claimed they had letters of support of 40 MLAs.
The effective strength of the Jharkhand assembly is 73 and the support of 37 MLAs is required for formation of a government.
Jharkhand PCC chief Pradeep Balmuchu, CLP leader Manoj Yadav and senior leader from the state Niyal Tirkey are in the forefront of the move for government formation in the state under President's rule for the last five months.
