RANCHI: With efforts on to form a government in Jharkhand where the Assembly has been in suspended animation, and consensus eluding the UPA
allies on a tribal chief ministerial candidate, state Congress and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leaders have started floating names of non-tribal leaders.
"The idea is to put an end to the tradition of having a tribal chief minister in Jharkhand," a senior Congress leader said and pointed out that since the creation of the state in November 2000, all the chief ministers happened to be tribals.
The state has been under the President's rule since JMM president Shibu Soren resigned from the office of chief minister in January this year following his defeat in the Tamar Assembly bypoll. "Soren tried his best to install a tribal as the chief minister but we opposed any such move and we hope we would be able to do away with the practice of a having a tribal CM," the Congress leader said.
Preferring anonymity, a JMM leader also admitted that most of the legislators were in a mood to have a non-tribal CM. The two front-running probables are JMM general secretary and former deputy CM Sudhir Mahato and Assembly Speaker Alamgir Alam of Congress, the JMM legislator, adding some of the Independent MLAs and Lalu Prasad-led RJD are also in favour of breaking the tradition.
Even as Jharkhand High Court lawyer and Constitution expert Sohail Anwar said that there was no bar on anyone becoming the CM if he or she enjoys the majority in the House, firebrand tribal leader and Jharkhand Disom Party chief Salkhan Murmu said political parties should better not change the tradition. "We should respect the feeling of the people of the state which was created in the name of tribals," said Murmu.
