Old-timers steal show

Ranchi, June 10: Sameer Mon of the Indian Army and Nidhi Singh of Indian Railways dashed to their individual gold in the 100m race at the fifth leg of the Indian Athletics Grand Prix Series-2009 today, held in Hotwar, the venue for the 34th National Games.

The winners of the fifth leg of the athletics meet were also the champions in the fourth leg, held at Jamshedpur on Sunday.

But, the cynosure of all eyes was Tata Sports Academy trainee Ritesh Anand, 22, who showed remarkable speed finishing second in the 100m dash with a timing of 10.60 seconds, 0.01 second less than Sameer Mon’s gold-winning timing of 10.59 seconds. An elated Ritesh was heard telling his coach that he would aim for a gold “next time”.

Today, the wind factor was negligible barely affecting the runners’ performances.

In the women’s discus event, national record-holder Seema Antil (CRPF) left her mark yet again by winning gold with a 55.43m throw. However, it was 9m short of Seema’s best of 64.64m. Antil, who lost the top spot to Krishna Punia (Indian Railways), was in her best form while Punia was off-colour barely making it to the medal tally.

In the men’s discus Simranjit Singh (BSF) threw the discus to 52.85m to win, a repeat of his superb performance in Jamshedpur.

Railways’ Hari Shankar Roy bagged the top spot with a high jump of 2.2m, a repeat of his gold-winning performance in Jamshedpur. However, he could not better his 2.25m national record.

In the 400m hurdles, Joseph Abraham of railways won the gold with a timing of 49.87seconds, a mere 0.36 second more than his national record of 49.51 seconds. In the 400m men’s dash, S.K. Mortaza of Bengal won gold with a timing of 47.51 seconds, pushing V.B. Beenish of railways to the second spot. In the women’s 400m, Saraswati Chand (state police) won the gold clocking 55.57 seconds.

The meet was held at the newly laid synthetic track at the main stadium of the Mega Sports Complex at Hotwar.

Though the floodlights were impressive, there was momentary panic among authorities when the power went off for 15 minutes. However, the track got the thumbs up of senior officials of Athletics Federation of India.
