JAMSHEDPUR: Noted choreographer and Padma Shri awardee Astab Deboo has expressed desire to work with the street children of the city.
Deboo said that a proposal to select street children and upgrade their dancing skills is under active consideration. The choreographer, who is noted for his contemporary and modern Indian classical dance styles, said his priority is to select deaf and dumb children so that he could also work with them.
"Right now, talks are on to select deaf and dumb children from the periphery of the steel city," said Deboo, who is also a senior functionary of the Salaam Balak Trust (SBT), which runs a sustained campaign to provide a platform to promising dancers of Indian streets.
In city to host a play, "Breaking Boundaries", for a charity show sponsored by a city-based suicide prevention centre, Jeevan, the 65-year-old fusion dance choreographer asserted that the sole objective of the organization is to shape up the career of the talented teens, who are, otherwise, discarded by society on one or the other pretext.
"For the last 40 years, I have been working for talented poor street children. It was only in the later stages of my career that I got associated with the SBT," said Deboo, who is currently choreographing Aishwarya Rai in Mani Ratnam's upcoming project "Raavana".
"I am choreographing Aishwarya for a dance sequence that depicts her escape from the clutches of eminent mythological character Raavana," said Deboo, who, so far, has choreographed popular films like "Omkara" and "Meenaxi".
On his association with the steel city, the Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner said it is always refreshing to come to the city where he completed his schooling.
"I passed out from the Loyola High School in 1964 and later shifted to Mumbai for further studies. I stay in regular touch with my school buddies. I visited the city recently to take part in the Loyola alumni function," he added.
