Karnataka joined Jharkhand in the semifinals of the 46th Dr. B.C. Roy Trophy, but only after a clarification on rules from the AIFF.
The AIFF's intervention was needed after Jharkhand, Karnataka and Punjab were all tied on six points after two wins and a loss each in their Quarterfinal Group A in Mandya, Karnataka.
As per the situation Jharkhand had 4:1 goals with a goal difference of +3, Karnataka had 5:3 and +2; while Punjab had 4:2 and +2.
This meant that Jharkhand was through with a better goal difference, but the match commissioner wasn't sure what rule should apply amongst Karnataka and Punjab, so the AIFF headquarters in Delhi had to be contacted.
So the AIFF replied to the Karnataka State FA that Karnataka would join Jharkhand in the semifinals as they had scored a goal more then Punjab though having the same goal difference.
A really sad episode that the match commissioner S. Samuel, who is on the ground in Mandya, wasn't aware of the latest rules applicable.
