, Jun 08, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- TATLY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Tata Steel on Friday forged a pact with the Jharkhand government to set up an industrial training centre in the state to empower local youths with technical expertise that will make them employable.
The steel major, which has embarked upon a Rs 200 billion ($US4.23 billion) brownfield expansion to augment its production capacity to 10 million tonnes by 2010 in the state, entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Jharkhand government for the proposed industrial training centre.
"An urgent need for developing the skills of local youths and making them fit for employability was recognised both by the government of Jharkhand as well as Tata Steel," the steel major said in a statement.
Asked if the company would absorb the passouts of the training centre, a Tata Steel spokesperson said: "They may be, they may not be, all depending on the company's requirement."
"The idea of the industrial training centre is to empower local youths with technical expertise so that they could find gainful employment opportunity, be it anywhere," the spokesperson said.
As part of the agreed terms of the MoU, the company will select 75 students from Jharkhand to train at the centre, while the state government will choose 25 others through a joint combined entrance competitive examination board.
The training centre is likely to be functional from next year.
