Indian films lure viewers

Jamshedpur, March 19: International films and documentaries screened at the 14th Jamshedpur International Film festival failed to draw as many viewers as the Indian films shown today.

Though Celluloid Chapter, the organisers, had managed to get the highest number of international films this year, the audience was glued to Indian films.

“Watching foreign films and understanding them right away is impossible. So, we chose the Indian ones,” said Arnab Chowdhury.

“The Celluloid Chapter has brought better films than ever this year. I loved Antaheen for its contemporary style and message and Aparna Sen’s brilliant acting,” said Tagore Academy teacher Ratnabali Sengupta.

Many also felt that Slumdog Millionaire was not able to meet expectations, compared to Antaheen, Dasvidaniya or Mumbai Meri Jaan.

“When you hear about an Academy Award-winning film, you expect something out of the world. As far as I know, nobody here liked Slumdog. The other movies showing contemporary subjects or human relations were better. I also liked Rebelove, the movie from the Czech Republic,” said Subhojeet Ghosh, a Tata Steel employee.

But the organisers had one regret. “The film festival was aimed to help the youth understand cinema. It is sad that the youth still thinks of cinema as a mode of entertainment. We have to try harder next time,” said Celluloid Chapter secretary Debashish Chakraborty.
