RANCHI: Legislators from Jharkhand on Saturday handed over a letter to Congress general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Jharkhand K
Keshav Rao having signature of all the MLAs who are in favour of formation of government in the state.
Sources in the Congress party revealed that the letter had the signatures of 38 MLAs, including seven Independents. The letter was submitted to Rao so that he hands it over to Ahmad Patel, the political advisor to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The Independent MLAs who have signed the letter include former deputy chief minister Stephen Marandi who was initially in favour of election.
To form a government in Jharkhand, any alliance or party requires support of at least 37 MLAs in the House of 73. Eight seats are vacant due to various reasons.
The meeting between Patel and Rao is likely to take place on Sunday when the former returns from foreign tour. "The effort of the legislators is to convince the UPA chairperson and other central leaders that they can form a government and have the requisite strength to prove majority in the House," the Congress leader said.
State unit president of Congress Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu and JMM general secretary Sudhir Mahato, who have been campaigning in Delhi for the last one week to push the plan of government formation, were very optimistic.
"We are trying to convince the central leaders to form a government and go for election under a democratic government," Mahato said, adding: "Result of their efforts will be visible within a couple of days."
Jharkhand is under President's rule since January 19 after JMM chief Shibu Soren was forced to resign from the chief minister's office following his defeat in the Tamar by-election.
