While Jharkhand Governor M.O.H. Farooq was in the state capital to unfurl the national flag on the country's 61st Republic Day Tuesday, Chief Minister Shibu Soren did the honours in his constituency Dumka.
Addressing the gathering after hoisting the tricolour at the Morabadi ground here, the governor appealed to Maoist rebels to join the mainstream of society and also took the opportunity to enumerate the work of the state government. He also spelt out in detail the government's agenda for development of the people of the state.
Soren, who represents Dumka in the Lok Sabha and is seeking to be elected to the state assembly, stayed in his constituency and unfurled the tricolour there.
There was heavy security in the state in view of the threat of Maoist violence. Security at important government buildings and the railway were escalated. Maoist rebels in rural areas had called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations.
