Games on track: Bali

Jamshedpur, June 9: The chairman of the Games Technical Conduct Committee today brushed aside possibilities of a further postponement of the 34th National Games.

S.M. Bali, also the vice-president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) who was in Jamshedpur today to inspect the infrastructure for the sports meet, assured that the Games would be held from November 21 to December 5. He added that although 25 per cent work was left, he was sure that all facilities would be ready before November.

Making no issue of the previous postponements, Bali cited the examples of other states where the event was delayed because of various factors. “Jharkhand is not the only state which has witnessed a delay. The Games was delayed twice in Hyderabad and thrice in Guwahati. There are certain plausible reasons that lead to postponement,” he said.

He, however, remained non-committal when asked about the possible fallouts if the Games was postponed yet again. “I don’t know what steps the IOA will take if the Games is not held in November. But it will not be shifted to Kerala since infrastructure there is not ready,” he said.

Asked why the Games were postponed five times, he said several factors, including political, came into play. Besides, the National Games Organising Committee had to deal with many compulsions.

On cracks forming on the pillars of the multi-purpose sports complex in Hotwar, Bali said that he was not aware of it and that his job was to look after the conduct of the Games and verify the quality of the equipment. “Infrastructure is the state government’s baby. I will submit a report to the IOA about the progress of the process of installing the facilities,” he added.

Bali said that he was satisfied with the infrastructure in Jamshedpur. “Things are okay here. I am not aware of the situation in Dhanbad as I’m yet to visit that place,” he added.
