After result, rush for admission- Students swamp St Xavier’s, Karim City

Ranchi/Jamshedpur, May 11: The matriculation result is out, but it’s not yet time for the students to relax. For, the competition gets even tougher from here as the battle for berth in intermediate courses begins.

While many colleges in the state capital have already started distributing admission forms, the institutes at Jamshedpur will join the race from next week. Only Karim City College began selling the forms today.

The total number of intermediate seats in Ranchi colleges is about 2,000. Some of the colleges that conduct intermediate classes are St Xavier’s, Marwari College, both the boys’ and girls’ sections, Ranchi Women’s College, Doranda College, Gossner College and Nirmala College.

The admission process has already begun in autonomous colleges such as St Xavier’s College and Marwari colleges. However, getting a berth in these two colleges would be tough as the number of seats have been reduced due to lack of adequate infrastructure. While St Xavier’s has slashed the seats from 500 to 350 in science, arts and commerce streams each, the Marwari colleges have reduced the number from 640 to 300 in all the streams.

“We have already sold more than 1,000 forms on the first day itself. Students can also download forms from our website, www.marwaricollege.org,” said principal of Marwari College Javed Ahmed. The forms, costing Rs 100, will be distributed till May 30.

The cut-off marks at Marwari colleges for science and commerce subjects is 70 per cent and above for general students while for OBC and ST/SC categories, it is 65 per cent and 60 per cent respectively. For arts subjects, the cut-off is 60 per cent for general students and 55 and 50 per cent for OBC and ST/SC students, respectively.

St Xavier’s has not yet decided on the cut-off although it has started selling forms at a cost of Rs 200 each. The college will sell forms till June 5.

Doranda College will issue forms for Rs 100 each from May 15 to June 10. The college has fixed cut-off marks of 70 per cent for science subjects, 55 per cent for commerce and 60 per cent for arts.

Ranchi College, Ranchi Women’s College and Nirmala College are yet to begin distribution of forms.

Meanwhile, Jamshedpur Worker’s College will start distributing forms from May 15 and ABM College from May 17. “We have 1,700 seats in intermediate courses. This time, cut-off marks for science and commerce is 60 per cent while for arts, it is 55 per cent,” said S.S. Razi, principal of Jamshedpur Worker’s College.

Karim City College will select students on their grades. In science, an A+ in math, science and English will mean direct admission.

Students seeking admission in arts subjects should have an A+ in language subjects and social science. For commerce, a 70 per cent aggregate is necessary.
