RANCHI: Academics and tribal leaders have decried the efforts of a section of UPA MLAs to build a consensus on a non-tribal chief minister in the
state. They feel that the move is aimed at ending the "tribal" identity of the state which has been under the President's rule since January 19.
Former vice chancellor of Ranchi University Ram Dayal Munda, who is also an expert on tribal affairs, said that the move is a political stunt. "It is uncalled for and has no meaning in today's political affairs in the state. People would like to see a tribal CM at the helm of affairs since Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar merely because of its tribal identity."
Munda said that the people of the state want development. "We need a politician who has the willpower to steer the state on the road to development," he added.
Former Congress MLA Dev Kumar Dhan likened the move as an attempt to cheat the people. "There is no constitutional binding, but the Government of India, in principle, has accepted the tribal identity of the state by not implementing the recommendations of the delimitation commission in the state. The number of seats reserved for the schedules tribes remains unchanged in the state. Still some politicians, who aspire to become the chief minister of this mineral-rich state, are making efforts in that direction," Dhan said.
"These efforts will not serve any purpose and, in the long run, would only make things worse by creating a divide in society in the name of tribals and non-tribals," he added.
President of the Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP) and former BJP MP Salkhan Murmu also differed on the issue. "There are many things which are decided on precedence and not by Constitution. If the politicians are really interested in the welfare of the state, then they should not strive for creating a gulf between the tribals and non-tribals of the state over such issues," he said. “The JDP will tackle the issue socially and politically if efforts in this regard continue,” he added.
