College seeks new grades

Jamshedpur, Sept. 28: Jamshedpur Worker’s College has applied to National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore for a re-assessment.

The request was made by principal of the college S.S. Razi to obtain a better grade level.

Jamshedpur Worker’s College is the first college of the steel city to get NAAC accreditation in 2003. But due to some shortcomings, the college only managed to get a C grade from the assessment team.

But the same year, Jamshedpur Women’s College and Graduate School College for Women successfully obtained a B++.

“It was mainly because of the infrastructure and scarcity of the teaching staff that we got a C grade. There are 65 sanctioned posts but we had only 24 teachers.

“At that time we did not offer any vocational courses and the infrastructure was also not up to the mark. Now I think the college is competent to get a better gradation,” the principal of the college said.

The college now has 52 teachers, most of them holding a PhD degree. The college has vocational courses in IT, MBA and recently started postgraduate courses in commerce and arts.

Another reason for assessment by NAAC is for recognition and approval from United Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.

“We want to improve our infrastructure for which we need grants from the government. Better grades by NAAC mean better grant from UGC,” said Razi.

Recently after an audit by a team from the Ranchi University, Jamshedpur Worker’s College was chosen as the best among the 34 constituent colleges.

The principal thinks this achievement would gain them points at the NAAC accreditation.

“I consider this as a big achievement. Our accounts were up-to-date when the audit team visited. The accounts department gets full credit for the recognition,” Razi added.
