Bullseye! - 51 medals at school games

Jamshedpur, Jan. 2: Young archers have given Jharkhand the perfect New Year gift by bagging the National School Championships with the state team bagging 51 medals — 20 gold, 19 silver and 12 bronze.

In the 54th edition of the school nationals held at Aurnagabad, the 48 youngsters — for some it was their first trip out of state — aimed their bows with perfection. And with tips from teammate and ace archer Mangal Ho, Jharkhand hit bullseye.

“Yes, it’s a good achievement. The school nationals is a good platform for our archers to graduate to other levels of the sport,” said Sanjeeva Singh, the secretary of the Jharkhand Archery Association (JAA). He said the winning archers would make for a talented reserve pool for Jharkhand.

The state outfit comprised players from Ranchi, Dumka, Hazaribagh and Bokaro. The majority hailed from East and West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan.

Ho, who’s from the neighbouring Seraikela-Kharsawan district, showed the way to his young teammates by pocketing three individual gold medals in the under-19 boys’ FITA round and also a silver in 70m event.

His teammates Sourav Dutta, Milan Singh Sardar and Nilesh Singh bagged the second slot.

Ho’s district mate Padiya Singh Sardar was not far behind and bagged gold medals in the 70m, 50m and 30m events, besides a silver in 60m.

The team’s performance in Aurangabad is by far the best in the school nationals, even surpassing its tally of 76 medals (30 gold, 24 silver and 22 bronze) at the school nationals held in Jamshedpur in February 2007.

This year’s win is also a huge improvement from Jharkhand’s performance at the 2nd National School Games and Sports Championship at Rourkela in January 2008. The archers bagged 15 medals (5 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze) in that meet.

“We could not go to Manipur for the last nationals as our train reservations went awry. Otherwise, we would have won several medals,” the JAA secretary said.

Singh, who was bestowed the prestigious Dronacharya Award two months ago, has already made plans to develop the skills of archers.

“We plan to hold training camps and state championships to give them the required exposure. We are very confident that some of our players would certainly win a slot in the national squad for the Olympics in years to come,” he added.
