Tax officials and traders lock horns

Jamshedpur, Feb. 8: Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and district sales tax department are at loggerheads over the payment of advance tax.

The department is planning to impose advance tax to meet the annual target in March, but the industrialists have complained that they are in not in a position to pay now. Senior officials of the sales tax department said they had collected 65 per cent of this year’s target, pegged at Rs 1,003 crore. Joint commissioner of the department K.C. Jha said that though, no formal notice has been issued as yet traders might be asked to pay advance tax.

SCCI vice-president (welfare) Suresh Sonthalia said they have clarified their stand to the officials of the sales tax. “At this time, the traders cannot pay any regular tax, leave alone advance payment. Their bills have not been cleared by their clients,” said Sonthalia.
