IN A bid to refurbish its present condition, Tata Motors, the largest commercial vehicles manufacturer of India has once again started the hiring of temporary workers. It has already hired more than 1,650 temporary workers for its Jamshedpur unit in the new year.

Heavy duty commercial vehicles are manufactured in the Jamshedpur unit. In 2008, more than 700 temporary workers were let go as the production fell due to a severe sales slump.

While speaking to the media, a spokesperson of the company said, “From the beginning of February we have hired over 1,650 temporary workers for our Jamshedpur plant.” He further added, “The plant is also functioning normally.”

The need for the hiring of temporary workers was felt by the concerned officials of the Tata Motors when it recorded its commercial vehicles sales in January at 17,373 units, its highest in three months.

But it was 43 per cent down as compared to its January 2008 production, which was at 30,530 units. The Jamshedpur plant of Tata Motors faced three temporary block closures on November 6-8, November 25-29 and December 8-13 in 2008.
