Jamshedpur, Feb. 9: The supporters of former deputy chief minister Sudhir Mahto today organised a puja at Sonari to pray for his ascension to the chief minister’s chair.

At the rudra abhishek near Ram Mandir, about 11 priests assembled to perform the ritual. The supporters left no stone unturned in appeasing the gods. They used 11kl of milk, ghee and sugarcane juice during the havan.

Shailendra Mahto, a supporter of the JMM leader, said the entire ritual was sponsored by Star Boys’ Club at Sonari.

Members of the club claimed they have always been inspired by the leadership quality of Mahto and therefore organised this puja.

The JMM leader’s suppo-rters said: “Today is purnima, which is considered an auspicious day for performing rituals. We want god to grant our wish and make Mahto the next chief minister of Jharkhand.”

“He has been Jharkhand’s deputy chief minister for so many years. In the absence of any other leader in the state, he is the best man for the chief minister’s job. His elevation to the post of chief minister would help boost regional development,” said Jayanti Mahto, who performed the rituals with her husband, Shailendra.

“His three other brothers — Nirmal, Asim and Ashok — played an important role in the Jharkhand movement. The JMM party should now seriously think of helping Mahto to become the next chief minister,” said Shailendra.

He said that the UPA would also support the candidature of Mahto as the next chief minister of Jharkhand.
