Armed youth held at Munda rally

JAMSHEDPUR: The political cauldron in Jharkhand has been stirred following the arrest of an armed youth at a rally here where former chief minister Arjun Munda was the chief guest.

While the BJP indicated that the UPA had conspired to eliminate Munda, the UPA constituents brushed aside the allegation claiming investigation was on and the facts would be known soon.

One Manoj Sundi, a petty criminal, was nabbed by the Z-class security guards of Munda when he was trying to get close to the former chief minister at a Kali Puja pandal at Dhatkidih under the Bistupur PS area on Saturday last. Sundi had a loaded pistol.

Though Munda declined to politicise the issue saying that he had faith in the police administration, he expressed concern over the security lapse. He urged the government to look into the matter.

However, his party workers here have raised a storm over the issue. They accused the former chief minister’s political rivals of conspiring to eliminate him.

With an oblique reference to the UPA, Jamshedpur Mahanagar BJP president Rambabu Tiwary lamented that Munda’s opponents had stooped to such a low. He claimed that the former chief minister’s political rivals were scared of his popularity and feared that he would stage a comeback soon.

Party legislator from Jamshedpur (West) constituency Saryu Rai, expressing concern over the incident, hoped the police would soon find out the truth. He alleged that law and order situation had collapsed in the state after the UPA took over the government.

On the other hand, JMM MP Sunil Mahato denied that the UPA had a hand in the incident. “Munda may be our political rival. We prefer to battle through the ballot, not the bullet,” he said.

Deputy CM Sudhir Mahato, who is the JMM legislator from Ichagarh constituency of Seraikela-Kharsawan district, said the BJP was making baseless allegations.

The matter is being investigated and it would be too premature to make any comments at this moment, he added. According to him, the BJP was trying to gain mileage from the incident by politicising it.

The party’s intentions would be washed away once the probe report is revealed, the MLA claimed. Meanwhile, the East Singhbhum district SP Ashish Batra said it was too premature to give it the assassination angle.

Pointing out that the arrested youth had a criminal record and was undergoing trial in the court in an Arms Act case, Batra said preliminary investigations have revealed that he was passing through the area when he stopped to have a closer look at what was going on at the site.

The SP added that Sundi was being interrogated by the police.
