Anil Soren sets National mark

JAMSHEDPUR: Athletics took a back seat on the second day of the 20th National inter-zonal junior meet here at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Monday.

The factional fight between two rival groups in the Jharkhand Athletic Association came out in the open as rival factions clashed and disrupted the championship by breaking electronic gadgets and plastic chairs. However, no participant was injured.

In the melee two local officials and a few guys from either side were injured. Two of the injured were rushed to the local hospital for treatment.

The police arrested the rival faction leader Arif Imam, a DSP with Jharkhand police, his son and one more supporter.

The proceedings continued after a two-hour delay under tight security.

“In my long association with athletics in Jamshedpur, I never witnessed such a shameful act,” bemoaned Charles Borromeo, gold medal winner in 1982 Asian Games and one of the officers with Tata Steel.

The delay caused by the disruption left a huge backlog of events. When it seemed the meet would be called off, AFI secretary Lalit Bhanot asked the organiser’s to go ahead with the events because this meet was a selection trial for the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune in October.
