Youth goes for turmeric farming to prevent being drawn to Maoists

Youngsters from Raisindri village in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur District have taken up turmeric farming to keep themselves away from Maoists.

Maoists leaders are very active in recruiting local unemployed youngsters. And youngsters most of the time used to work for them just for some financial gains.

Jharkhand Jangal Bachao Andolan has taken up the issues of training the local youth about methods and benefits better farming such as turmeric cultivation.

Gopal Singh Munda, a resident of Raisindri village said the cultivation of turmeric was a welcome development.

"The turmeric gets ready in the month of December. We plough the field lightly after harvesting. We then grind turmeric in a traditional grinder. Then again we dry the turmeric roots again. After that we again grind it. Then finally it gets ready and we dry it again," said Munda.

Development in region and financial dependence of local youths will help in eradicating the Maoists from these area. Several development works have suffered due to Naxal movements.
